Digital Photography - 2010
Equipment: Nikon D300 with Nikon 60mm f/2.8 macro lens, Nikon SB900 and SB800 Flash Units
Medium: Helicon Focus & Adobe Photoshop CS4

Carpenter ants are large (.25 to 1 in/0.63 to 2.5 cm) ants indigenous to many parts of the world. They prefer dead, damp wood in which to build nests. This specimen was collected near my home. A nice big specimen to hone my skills on.

This image required 8 slices to blend into the final image, and is quite large , measuring 4200x4200 pixels, or 14x14 inches @ 300 ppi (pixels per inch). You can zoom this image up to its maximum size to see a lot of detail. This image was shot using Nikon flash units with a diffusion cylinder placed around the specimen to soften the lights.
